Bundaberg

The Bundaberg group formed in 2000 following a Women's forum. This forum was organized by the BSES looking at women's needs in the sugar industry.

Bundaberg WIS Mission Statement:

"Our mission is to unite, support and represent women in Bundaberg district sugar industry through information, interaction and training and by being active participants within the industry".

The monthly meetings are held at the Bundaberg Canegrowers. At each meeting there is a voluntary meeting contribution of $1.00 per member.

Suncorp Business Banking have supported Bundaberg WIS from the first forum and are still associated with them today. The yearly fund raising venture, Melbourne Cup function began in 2003 which is well supported from local businesses.

In 2006 Bundaberg WIS received the SRDC Regional Award for Excellence, for grower groups in the Sugar Industry. And have successfully applied for SRDC funding for major activities...bus trips / bug check etc. and successfully applied for an Arts Grant from the Bundaberg City Council to fund the three creative writing workshops.

Trips organised with the help of BSES to the cotton district of Narrabri in 2005 (SRDC funded) and to the cane growing Northern Rivers District of NSW in 2006 (SRDC funded). After returning from the Narrabri trip the women were enthused for IPM, best management practice and farming systems, and so held a Bug Checking course in 2006.

Three writing skills workshops where held in 2006/2007. And the group launched their own book "You Can't Eat the Dirt" in April 2008.
